There are two main types of printing traditional litho and new digital printing. Digital printing is the new alternative to traditional litho printing, because of its many advantages over the older, more traditional printing method, Digital printing is rapidly becoming the first choice for many small businesses that require smaller print runs for their print jobs e.g. business cards, letterheads and marketing materials.
As the digital print process has no film output, no plate making nor does it require drying time, there are obvious advantages of both speed and cost. With Digital print, you have the option to print just one copy of your artwork, or you can print hundreds or even thousands, and every copy will look identical to the first one and because there is no set up of the printing press, your job can be printed in minutes rather than days.
| Digital | Litho |
| Speed - The first proof or even the first print could be rolling off the digital press in literally a few minutes from receipt of your approved files. So, if speed is of the essence then choose Digital printing for your printing requirements. | Speed – Plates have to be made and mounted, the previous ink on the printing press needs to be washed off and new colours mixed. This takes more time, but for longer print runs and less urgent jobs Litho becomes the better choice. |
| Cost - Since the set up time is so short, shorter run jobs work out considerably cheaper than when carried out on a Litho printing press. Therefore, for smaller quantities of Business Cards, Invites, Tickets, Leaflets, menus, reports, special offers, promotional leaflets etc, choose Digital for your printing requirements. | Cost - Once the printing press is set up and running, the unit cost for each print is much lower, So for larger print runs e.g. 2000+ A4 leaflets for example Litho can be the cheaper solution. Litho is also the choice for thicker material products and for textured papers. |
| Up to Date - Print What You Want . When You Want! You only have to print the quantity that you actually need in the short term, so that any fluctuations in prices, stock, range, colour etc can easily be updated and printed again next time, this is more environmentally friendly. Also there are no excess storage costs, too!. | Up to Date - As litho is far cheaper for larger print quantities, you can find yourself printing far more than you actually need which can result in a lot of old, out of date, incorrect or even obsolete printing. However litho is still the best choice for large quantities for mailings, many branch locations, exhibitions etc. |
| Variable Data – You may be familiar with mail merge from Word and the benefits of personalising your mailings, the good news is that now with digital print you can personalise each print with your supplied data, you can also change the graphics which makes the extra cost minimal compared to the increase in the effectiveness of the mailing. | Variable Data – New plates and the set up involved are expensive and there is no way to personalise each copy with litho printing, so you need to choose the most effective method for your requirements and we are happy to advise you on the best route forwards to provide you with the most cost effective, best quality solution for your needs. |
